Breast Reduction (Mammoplasty)

A breast reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty) is an operation to reduce the size of your breasts. Sometimes it can also help to improve the shape of your breasts. It's important that you consider the options of surgery carefully and have realistic expectations of the results. This procedure is only suitable for certain women and is usually safe and effective but complications can happen. Being aware of the complications helps you as a patient to make an informed decision about surgery - knowing about them may help you detect and treat any problems early.

What is the breast reduction operation?

A breast reduction is a procedure to make your breasts smaller. It can sometimes help to improve their shape too.

Is a breast reduction operation suitable for me?

You may benefit from a breast reduction if you feel self-conscious about the size of your breasts, whether at work or during exercise. Many women also experience discomfort, such as rashes, sweating, and blistering under the breasts, or grooves in their shoulders from bra straps. Finding comfortable, off-the-shelf bras and dresses can be difficult, often requiring special bespoke clothing. Additionally, some women suffer from back and neck pain or poor posture due to the weight of their breasts. However, it can be challenging to reduce breasts smaller than a C/D cup size, as going smaller may risk affecting breast shape and causing complications with the nipples. Patients who undergo breast reduction surgery often feel more comfortable with their appearance and enjoy the benefits of better-fitting clothes.

What does the operation involve?

The operation is performed under general anaesthetic and typically lasts about three hours, requiring an overnight hospital stay. Incisions are made around the areola and down the breast, creating an anchor-shaped or inverted T scar, to remove excess skin and fat. The breast is then reshaped, and the nipple is lifted. In cases of very large breasts, the nipple and areola may need to be completely detached and reattached at a higher position, which is more common for larger reductions. Drain tubes may be inserted during the procedure and are usually removed the day after surgery. Dressings are typically in place for two weeks, and a support bra is recommended for six to eight weeks post-surgery.

What are the alternatives to breast reduction surgery?

If you are overweight, losing weight can help reduce breast size. Custom-fitted clothes may provide better comfort, but they are usually more expensive than off-the-shelf options. For some women, liposuction can effectively reduce breast volume and may complement breast reduction surgery.
