Implant Exchange/Removal
Common reasons for patients wanting to exchange their breast implants: 1. Capsular contracture 2. Implant rupture or leakage 3. Implant displacement 4. If you wish to alter the size or shape of your breast/implants 5. Changes in breast tissue as a result of weight changes or skin stretching, for example after childbirth and the implants no longer suit the patient's body frame 6. Implants placed beyond manufacturer's guidance and patient desires the implants to be exchanged accordingly 7. Patient wants the implants to be removed completely without being replaced
What the procedure involves
The procedure is very similar to the original breast implant surgery. The surgery will be carried out with general anaesthetic (unconscious) and depending on the details of the procedure may be a day case or a couple of nights stay if drains are needed or other procedures are combined. The surgery is usually carried out through the old scar to gain access to the implant for exchange or removal. Depending on the scarring of the original surgery it is sometimes necessary to remove part or most of the “capsule” scar from around the original implant at the time of the replacement surgery. This may require also a change the pocket to receive the new implant (from subglandular/under the breast tissue to submuscular/under the muscle or vice versa). If the goal of the surgery is to remove the implant without replacement this is sometimes performed in combination with a breast mastopexy/lift to create a more proportional breast shape.
