Labiaplasty is a broad term referring to a range of female genitalia rejuvenation surgery. It is most often used in reference to the labia minora reduction (inner vaginal lips – flaps of skin either side of the vaginal opening) and refers to reducing the size and reshaping the labia minora. It has been colloquially termed “designer vagina.”
The shape of women’s external genitalia varies greatly and there is not often “one size suits all.” This combined with a growing awareness of our own bodies and appearances has led to the popularity of this procedure increasing in recent years worldwide. Women may seek this type of surgery for both functional and/or aesthetic reasons. Large labia minora can be symptomatic when doing sports such as cycling, horse-riding, running and any activity where tight fitting clothes are worn. Some women also find having large labia minora uncomfortable when wearing certain underwear and also during sexual intercourse. In addition to this women may not like the appearance of their large labia minora whether they have symptoms or not.
As mentioned above the size of women’s labias vary greatly throughout the population. The causes of large labia minora are often genetic (born with naturally larger labia) or hormonal (during puberty/pregnancy/menopause hormonal changes can affect the size of the labia). Childbirth is known to stretch as well as sometimes cause labia minora tears. Sexual activity and age has also been linked to cause enlarged labia.
Labiaplasty surgery is performed as a day-case procedure and is often under local anaesthetic (awake) or under general anaesthetic (asleep) as per preference of the individual patient. The surgery often involves removing the “perceived” excess labia minora tissue and placing dissolvable stitches to close the wound. Some variations of this technique using wedge excisions or flaps are occasionally used. All variations in technique involve scarring of some sort.
