"Tummy tuck"/Abdominoplasty

An abdominoplasty or "tummy tuck" is an operation to improve the appearance of your abdomen. It involves removing excess skin and fat in the lower part of the abdomen. It's important that you consider the options of surgery carefully and have realistic expectations of the results. This procedure is only suitable for certain people and is usually safe and effective but complications can happen. Being aware of the complications helps you as a patient to make an informed decision about surgery - knowing about them may help you detect and treat any problems early.

What is an abdominoplasty operation?

An abdominoplasty or “tummy-tuck” operation is a procedure to improve the appearance of your abdomen. It involves removing excess skin and fat in the lower part of the abdomen resistant to weight loss. In some patients tightening of your abdominal muscles is also required.

Is an abdominoplasty operation suitable for me?

After pregnancy or weight loss it is common for the skin of your abdomen to stretch and not shrink back. Diet and exercise are unable to remove these lower abdominal stretch marks that can appear and bother some patients. Often a bulge in the lower abdomen is present which can overhang clothes or bikini bottoms. This can sometimes make you reluctant to wear certain clothes or go swimming. If you feel uncomfortable about your abdomen or are self-conscious about what your abdomen looks like for the reasons stated above you may benefit from an abdominoplasty.

What does the operation involve?

The operation is performed under general anaesthetic and typically lasts about three hours, requiring a 2-3 night hospital stay. Drain tubes may be inserted and are usually removed one or two days after surgery. Dressings are generally in place for two weeks, and a support garment or binder is recommended for six weeks. The type of abdominoplasty performed may vary based on individual patient needs and the condition of the abdomen.

What are the different types of abdominoplasty?

Standard Abdominoplasty: An incision is typically made in a curve from one hip to the other, just above the pubic area. Excess skin and fat are removed between the pubic area and the umbilicus (belly button). The skin above the umbilicus is lifted as a flap to allow for tightening and closure of the abdomen. A small cut may be made in this flap to reposition the umbilicus or create a new one. In some cases, abdominal wall muscles may need tightening, and liposuction may be used to remove excess fat or enhance contouring. Fleur-de-lis Abdominoplasty: This procedure is typically indicated if there is significant excess skin hanging around the abdomen or above the umbilicus, often resulting from substantial weight loss or post-bariatric surgery. It resembles a standard abdominoplasty but includes an additional vertical incision from the umbilicus to just below the breastbone. This extended incision allows for the removal of excess skin and fat that may have caused a bulge above the umbilicus. Mini-Abdominoplasty: This is usually indicated for women who have a little excess skin above the pubic bone and/or a high umbilicus. Lower Bodylift/Belt Lipectomy: This procedure is typically required for patients who have experienced massive weight loss, whether through exercise, diet, or post-bariatric surgery. In addition to a standard or fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty, excess skin and fat from the lower back are removed through an incision in that area. The procedure may also be staged.
